A Humbling Day Performing at Skid Row: My Journey of Purpose Through Music – By Omar Cook
Omar Cook Speaks Hope into Skid Row | Black August Community Event Performance (LA CAN)
On August 22nd, I performed at Skid Row for a Black August community event hosted by the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LA CAN). It wasn’t just another show for me as it was a deeply humbling experience that shifted my entire perspective on what I want my music to stand for.
I walked 30 minutes from my apartment to the venue that evening, and as I passed by rows of tents and unhoused people, I felt an overwhelming wave of emotion. I’ve been feeding members of the Skid Row community for nearly a decade, but this day felt different. As I listened to my own songs on my headphones to prepare for the performance, I fought back tears. Walking those streets reminded me just how fast life can take a turn, and it brought my whole career into focus.
In that moment, I knew exactly what I wanted to use my voice and talents for: to provide hope and inspiration for those who need it the most. Too many people walk this earth with no hope and no help, and I believe part of my purpose is to be a voice that tells them they are seen, loved, and not forgotten.
When I took the stage, I wore my Rich With God crewneck, because one day I want the people in my audience to wear my apparel not just as a brand, but as a symbol—acknowledging that God is the true source of all provision. I performed my songs “Desires” and “Real Love,” and it was more than just music; it was me pouring my heart out and speaking life into the community.
Everyone at the event was so welcoming and kind. I loved watching the other performers, learning more about the history of Black August, and hearing local speakers talk about how we can uplift our community together. This event confirmed for me the kinds of stages I want to stand on and the impact I want my music to have. While I know God will take me to even bigger stages one day, I also know that the local community is where the deepest impact is felt.
My heart was full that night. Performing for the Skid Row community, a community I’ve loved and served for years, was more than a blessing—it was divine confirmation that my purpose is to inspire, uplift, and provide hope. America needs hope now more than ever, and I’m grateful to be one of the voices delivering it.
I’ll never forget that performance, and I pray it’s just the beginning of how I’ll continue to use my art to heal, connect, and bring people closer to love and faith.
